Wonderful find this 1925 Louisville & Nashville Railroad lantern made by the Armspear Manufacturing Company of New York.
This lantern is known as a short-globe design model “1925” lantern with a clear globe manufactured between 1925 and 1931.

The white/clear lantern was used by the brakeman to give the general, more common signals around the rail yard. They were swung by hand. A white lantern (or a green lantern) could be used to stop a train at a flag station.

The Railroad History,
The Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L & N RR) was born March 5, 1850. It took nine years to finish the 189mile section of track between Louisville Kentucky & Nashville Tennessee. The L&N extended its reach far beyond its two original cities, stretching to St. Louis, Memphis, Atlanta, and New Orleans with over 10,000 miles of track. The railroad operating under the L & N name continuously for 132 years and in 1982 was sold.

The Lantern History,
Armspear Manufacturing originally began operations as the Railroad Signal Lamp and Lantern Company in the 1880's. After World War I, Armspear entered the (short globe) lantern market with its 1925 model and continued producing these in their own facilities until around 1931. After 1931, short-globe lanterns with the Armspear name were produced under contract by Adams & Westlake until the 1960's, but these had a strong similarity to the Adams & Westlake "Kero" short-globe lantern.
