Antique 19th Century Pack Mule Wooden Saddle Box, Pack Saddle Pannier
This is a very rare find. We date this piece between 1870-1890 during the South Dakota, Black Hills Gold Rush.
The box is made of tongue and groove bead board with steel strapping which runs front to back on each end of the box. The lid is hinged with steel strap hinges and the lid can be padlocked with the steel clasp. The box would have hung on the pack saddle with thick leather straps which are still attached to the box with square nuts and screws.
The backside of the box is contoured to the side of the pack mule.
The overall condition is fair with original hardware and leather straps intact, the wood shows wear and has damage on the right side and is held tight with metal wire. With some TLC and woodworking, it can easily be restored or leave as is for that perfect rustic look. We show a newer one in the pictures and how it goes on the Mule (not included).
