Rare 1980s, Griswold No.1 Cast Iron Mailbox with Newspaper Holder
This is a wonderful find, a very rare early version of Griswold No 1 mailbox, made by the Griswold Company of Erie PA. Yes, the same company that made all the wonderful cast iron pans and cookware. This mailbox is marked under the lid Griswold No.1.
Made of cast iron with metal back and metal newspaper holder. Has an upper door for inserting mail and a front door for retrieving mail also has lower newspaper loops. Mailbox is very solid, both doors function freely and front door latches.
The design on this mailbox is an early Arts and Crafts style, the upper lid is design to look like cedar shake shingles, the door was designed to have a piece of colored or clean plastic sheeting inserted in the window area (this one is missing).
This is known as the first design of mailbox made by Griswold. This is only the second #1 Griswold mailbox we have owned, they are extremely rare.

Measures overall, 12½” tall, 6” wide, 4¾” depth.
Markings, Upper door- Griswold No 1, 382. Front door 381
Condition, No crack or chips in cast iron, has been painted, paint has chips throughout as shown in pictures.
