1964, EX 1634 Linen Fire Hose with Powhatan Brass Nozzle and Couplings

1964 EX 1634 Linen Fire Hose with Powhatan Brass Nozzle and Couplings
Wonderful find; this unused 1964 fire hose was most likely made by Potter-Roemer Inc. of California. Powhatan Brass & Iron Works of West Virginia manufactured the brass nozzle and couplings. The brass nozzle measures 10” long.
This is a special hose; it was the first year the Federal Government approved the 1634 Linen hose for use. This hose is marked 1964, EXT 1634, F M, Made in the USA, with the original Underwriters Laboratories (UL) sticker.
These hoses were made in 50, 75, and 100-foot lengths; we have not unrolled this hose to measure it is most likely 50’ in length.

History,
The first year the Federal "EX 1634" unlined linen fire hose was manufactured was 1964.
Historically, unlined circular-woven linen fire hoses became widely popular in the late 19th century (around the 1890s) to replace heavy leather hoses, but individual manufacturer specifications and approval designations have distinct timelines. The "EX 1634" designation represents a specific Underwriters Laboratories (UL) file/approval tracking number for unlined linen fire hoses produced under the Federal brand.
The (F M) stamp denotes that the hose was independently tested and certified by Factory Mutual (now FM Global)

Condition: untested; all appears original and in good condition.
