The English Sewing Company purchased the Willimantic Linen Company and other New England mills in 1898 and formed the American Thread Company locally known as ATCO. The company reached its height in the early 20th century, and became the largest factory in Connecticut and the largest thread mill in North America.

It was originally known as the Wool Exchange Building, and owned by the Wool Warehouse Company. The wool company did not succeed and the building was acquired by the American Thread Company in 1907
