This is a very rare fire extinguisher made by Boyd & Son of Boston, Massachusetts. This extinguisher was made between 1900-1920.
The extinguisher is labeled Boyd - Army, Boyd made extinguishers and fire equipment for the army. Very unusual to have the handle on the front of an extinguisher they were normally on the back, this must have been how the Army wanted it made.

The Boyd name is well known in the fire equipment engineering business, starting in 1817 James Boyd invented the first fire hose with a rubber core and in the 1819 Boyd was the first American manufacturer of fire hoses. In
In 1881 Alexander Boyd moved the firm to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known now as James Boyd and Brothers, Inc they designed and built fire apparatus up to 1916. They held some early fire hose patents and made hose carts, hose carriages, ladder trucks, hose wagons, combination chemical hose wagons, and motorized equipment.
In the 1920’s, Boyd’s company changed its name to National Foam and began developing firefighting foams and delivery systems. They are now known as the world’s leader in fire equipment.
