We have for sale an Antique 1880s W. & L. E. Gurley Farmers or Drainage Level.
Wonderful find this 1880s leveling scope made by the W. & L. E. Gurley Company of Troy, New York. The level was patented Oct. 16, 1883, patent # 286,606 it is made of solid heavy brass 8 ¾” long with an extendible eye piece which will extend out ¾” at the top is a built-in ground level incased in a brass sleeve exterior is green painted, these came in (green and red) also included in the case is a degree gauge, these are designed to be mounted on a tripod or single staff. Designed as a less expensive option as a portable level for farmers and others laying drain tiles and ditches. The case is made of Honduras Mahogany with dovetail joint corners and brass hardware, the label inside the case is from an electrical company in Portland Oregon, which installed crank telephones, most likely used this instrument during installations.

Measures, case 12 ¼” x 4 ¼” x 3 ½” tall. Level 8 ¾” 2 ¼” x 1 ½”.
Condition, very clean, scope lens dirty inside, paint chips, case has been cleaned.
