1885 John Finzer and Brothers Company Tobacco Plug Cutter.
Wonderful find this antique cast iron tobacco plug cutter from the late 1800s. Manufactured by the Enterprise manufacturing company of Philadelphia PA. and made for the John Finzer and Brothers Company of Louisville KY. As an advertisement tool. You would have found these in mercantile and tobacco shops across America in the late 1800 bolted down to the countertop for cutting plug tobacco for customers.

Marked on both side of the cutting housing, John Finzer and Bro’s, and Louisville KY on the back frame. And marked on the underside of the base, Enterprise MFG Co. Phiada PA.

The cutter is made of cast iron with a steel cutting blade, it has had some black touchup paint, but we believe the gold lettering paint is original, cutting blade is rusty.

John Finzer and Brothers Company, originally known as Five Brothers Tobacco Works, was a tobacco business in Louisville, Kentucky. The business was established in 1866. The Company sold Burley leaf tobacco in sixteen-ounce plugs of navy tobacco. Their other brands included Jolly Tar, Five Brothers, and Pastime. The company also published (The Tobacconist), a Tobacco trade newspaper. The business was sold to the American Tobacco Company in the early 1900s.

Measures, 18 ¾” long, 5 ¾” wide, 6 ¾” tall with handle down, weighs 10 pounds.
Condition, repainted at some point, surface rust.
