Victorian Doll Pincushions, Lot of 4
Lovely collection of 4 Victorian doll pincushions. This is a great piece to display in a sewing/craft room, on a vanity or in a powder room. We cannot tell if the porcelain is marked as the markings for these are below the sewn-on cushions. There are no chips or cracks in the porcelain. The fabrics and lace show signs of wear consistent with age.
According to eHow, Porcelain half doll pincushions reached were most popular between 1900 and 1930. Most of these dolls were made in Germany, with some being produced in Italy, England, France, America and Japan. The earliest half dolls were similar in appearance to 18th-century Meissen dolls with finely sculpted limbs and features. These early half dolls were expensive and considered an extravagant possession. In the 1920s, the dolls became more modern in appearance, displaying bobs and flapper attire. These later models did not possess the same quality of design, being mass produced and poorly glazed.
The half dolls had a wide variety of uses in early 20th-century households. Most commonly, they were made into pincushions, whisk brooms, bottle stoppers, lamp shades and powder puffs. Some donned wide, flowing skirts that could cover teapots, toiletries, or other objects.
