Wonderful find this German made Tobacco Leaf Cutter made by RiegerWerk and AlexanderWerk. RiegerWerk and AlexanderWerk made several versions of this cutter, this is an early model #5525 which has an Art Deco Design which helps date it to between 1910-1920.
The cutter is fully functional and works wonderfully. Made of heavy cast iron, finished in a dark red with gold detailing. The cutter is all original except we replaced the screw that holds the crank handle in place.
To operate, the wood board on top flips open to reveal the white enameled feeder bed, at the cutting end you find a steel roller which lifts up, below is a wooden fluted roller, you place the tobacco leaves between the two roller and crank the cutting wheel, the bottom wooden roller rotates and pulls the tobacco leaves into the cutter wheel, cutting the tobacco into fine shreds.
The cutter is marked, “D.R. Patent”. This was the German Patent abbreviation meaning Deutsches Reich which was used from 1871 to 1945.

Measures, 13” long, 7” wide, 8 ½”” tall. Weighs 11 pounds.
Condition, blades are very sharp, paint chips throughout as show in pictures, wood has a couple dings and scuffs.
