Antique 1896 Union Stoneware / Minnesota Stoneware, Two Gallon Birch Leaf Crock.
Wonderful piece of Union Stoneware of Red Wing Minnesota. Which is also marked on the base Minnesota Stoneware Company Red Wing Minn.
This is a predecessor to the well-known Red Wing Stoneware Company.

A Little History,
Around 1896, salt glaze pottery was replaced by a creamy colored zinc glaze and the hand drawn cobalt designs were replaced with the stamped designs, which were the Elephant Ear and the Birch Leaf designs. Around 1906, the elephant ear and birch leaf designs were replaced with the now familiar red wing design.
Union Stoneware Company was in production from 1894 to 1906.
Minnesota Stoneware Company was in production from 1880 to 1906.
Both these companies, plus other stoneware companies merged to form the Red Wing Union Stoneware Company in 1906.

This lovely crock is known as a #2 Birch Leaf design, which dates right around 1896.
This crock does have a hairline crack left side of the number 2 with light staining, and one small chip at the base on the backside, also the normal manufacturing blemishes.

Measurements, 10¼” tall with lid, 9½” diameter at top rim, weighs 10 pounds.
