Thank you for viewing our Store,

We have for sale an Antique Blown Ribbed Glass COFFEE Hoosier Canister, Purple Sun Glass
This Americana canister in Colonial Traditional glassware style radiates old time charm with “COFFEE” molded into the glass. The glass has no chips or cracks but does have production bubbles which are a clear sign of its vintage age. The original tin lid screws on securely and is in good condition with scratches and wear that are consistent with its age.
This glassware style was manufactured by many glass makers circa 1899-1930 specifically for free standing Hoosier style kitchen cabinets.

Era; 1910
Marked; COFFEE
Measures; 7" tall, 4 1/4" diameter
Condition; good very light scuffs and minor chips on rim

HISTORY;
The glass has a very light amethyst purple tint which is most likely due to sitting in a windowsill and being exposed to sunlight. Old glassware made at the turn of the century 1880-1920 contained manganese dioxide (popularly called glass makers soap) used as a decolorizer. Iron oxide impurities in the silicon glass raw material often resulted in glass that was greenish rather than the desired ‘water clear’. With the addition of manganese dioxide very clear glass was achievable even with impure starting materials. Ironically, colorless glass that contains iron impurities and manganese dioxide will photochemically turn different shades of purple when exposed to the rays of the sun or to other ultra-violet sources. It is generally accepted that the ultra-violet light initiates an electron exchange between the manganese and iron ions. This changes the manganese compound into a form that causes the glass to turn purple. In the early 20th century, changes in manufacturing processes, diminished affordability of manganese as well as purer batch materials, dictated different ways to decolorize glass, and manganese use dwindled.
