Antique Lightning Rod Glass Globe, Milk Glass
Wonderful find, this Milk Glass Lightning Rod Globe. The globe dates to pre-1914. The globe shows a purple hue, this is caused by the glass being manufactured with a small amount of manganese dioxide in it, to make the pure white color, which if left in the sunlight will cause the glass to turn a purplish color. This phenomenon is known as solarization, which in clear glass happens over the course of a few months, with milk glass this process takes decades. Manganese Dioxide was used in glass starting around the 1870s until around 1915.
As normal with a used Lightening Globe the ends are a little chipped up, caused by the wind bouncing it around for years.
There are 5- globes sold separately all in different stages of purple.
Circa: 1870-1914
Measures: 4 ½” outside diameter, 5” height.
Condition: nice, with end chips, no cracks.
