Antique 1880s Woonsocket Rubber Company Wooden Shipping Crate
Wonderful find, this larger wooden shipping crate for Woonsocket Rubbers. The awesome Logo on the crate is of an elephant wearing rubber boots.
This crate is pushing, 140 years old and has the scares to prove it, it has so many awesome characteristics we want to explain, one side at a time.
The front is weathered and worn with faded logo and wood split and a repair using the lid of a tin-can, to make the repair.
Left side says, reads Men’s All Rubber Snow Excluder 12 pairs.
Right side the printed logo and information is gone, a leather handle was added at some point which is weathered and torn.
The back has the best visible writing with clear elephant logo.
The bottom is the bottom.
The top has the original lid which was turned into a 3/4 hinged lid with strap hinges nailed to the top, there was once a leather latch at the front edge only remnants remain. There is a metal strip nail long the right side to repair a damaged area, the metal is from an old tin-can.
Overall, the crate is awesome and will make an amazing coffee table in the man cave or the den. Note: during the early year's times were hard and items like a wood crate were not discarded they were used over and over again and repaired with whatever was available, like tin-cans.

History: Woonsocket Rubbers was established in 1867 to produce rubber goods, like boots and shoes by the 1880s they were the largest rubber factory in the world at that time. The company was purchased by the United States Rubber Co. in 1892, continuing its operations until the 1930s before closing permanently.

Measures: 24½” wide, 13¼” tall, 14½” depth.
Condition: rustic, weathered and worn as shown.
