Antique 1880 American Machine Co. Fluting Iron
Wonderful 1880s Hand Roller Fluting Iron made by the American Machine Co. of Philadelphia PA.
This is a hand operated fluter for applying pleats to clothing, cuffs, and collars. It is made of cast iron base with a steel nickel-plated pleating plate, and the roller is made of nickel-plated cast iron with a wooden handle. Inside the base is a cast iron heating plate (these are usually missing) these would have been placed on the stove and heated then set in the fluter base to heat the pleating plate, the heating plate has square holes in it, these are for picking it up when hot.
Overall condition is amazing for age, with original paint and pinstriping, nickel-plating has worn in areas and has light surface rust. We have cleaned and oiled the metal.
Circa: 1880s
Measures: Base 7” wide, 4” deep, 1½” tall, Roller 3½” wide, 5” tall,
