Antique Lightening Rod with Purple Glass Globe and Wind Arrow,
Wonderful 19th Century Copper & Glass Lightning Rod with Wind Arrow. The rod stands 54¼ inches tall and is made of copper tubing and capped at the top with a nickel-plated copper finial. The rod is held in a twisted steel roof bracket, which is 30” tall with legs that screw down to the roof. The glass globe is 4½ inches in diameter, the wind arrow is made of aluminum with a metal tail, and it is 18¼ inches in length.
Overall condition is garden rustic. As expected, the rod has dents and dings, and a deep patina. The twisted steel roof bracket is solid and has a galvanized finish, which is worn in spots. The arrow is in wonderful condition and marked with the number 303 at the spear end. The globe dates pre-1914, originally clear, although it shows a purple hue. This is caused by the glass being manufactured with a small amount of manganese dioxide in it, which makes the glass a clear translucent color. Although if left in the sunlight causes the glass to turn a purplish color. The globe has a tin metal guide through the center, which prevents us from cleaning the interior of the globe. Globe ends are a little chipped up, caused by the wind bouncing it around for decades.
Note,
Manganese Dioxide was used in glass starting around the 1870s and used until around 1915.
Circa: pre-1914
Measures: 54¼” tall, 18¼” wide.
