W & T Avery Brass Trade Scale
Wonderful brass trade scale made by W & T Avery Ltd, Birmingham, England. This Roberval-type scale was used in mercantile stores to measure bulk grain, seeds, and candies. It is made of a cast-iron base with a brass scoop pan and tray with brass counterweights. The scale is marked with the W & T Avery name and To Weigh 2lb. Weights are marked, W & T Avery 1-oz, 2-oz, 4-oz, 8oz, 1-lb.
Scale and all counterweights are marked with the official British government verification mark used by an authorized local weights and measures authority. (GB582) Used between 1800 & 1900.
History,
The W & T Avery scale-making business has been around for some time, started in 1818 by William and Thomas Avery in Digbeth, an area of Central Birmingham, England. In 1979, the company was taken over by GEC. In 2000, the business was acquired by the US-American Co., Weigh-Tronix to form Avery Weigh-Tronix, Avery Berkel Company.
Circa: 1900
Measures: 12½” long, 7½” tall, 7” in depth with scoops attached.
Condition: paint chips on base, brass shows wear and damage.
