Antique 1880s R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company Plug Cutter. Brown’s Mule Plug Tobacco.
Wonderful find, this antique cast-iron tobacco plug cutter from the late 1800s. Manufactured by the Enterprise Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia, PA, and made for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. As an advertising tool for Brown’s Mule Tobacco, you would have found these in mercantile and tobacco shops across America in the late 1800s, bolted down to the countertop for cutting plug tobacco for customers.
History, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company produced Brown's Mule chewing tobacco starting from the company’s founding in 1875. It was one of the original staple plug tobacco brands that helped establish the company.
The cutter is made of cast iron with a steel cutting blade; it appears to have the original black paint and gold highlight paint. Blade is original, has chips on the blade.
Circa: 1880s
Marked: R.J.R.TOB.CO. BROWN’S MULE
Measures: 18¾” long, 4¼” wide at base, 7” tall.
Condition: the paint and the pin striping are worn in areas. The blade is chipped.
