Antique Hand Crank Crimping Iron / Goffering Iron
Wonderful mid-1800s hand-crank fluting iron. These were used to apply ruffles, frills, flounces, and pleats in starched linens in the Regency and Victorian Eras. Made of brass and cast iron, these were bolted down to a table in the laundry area.
The brass finial atop the iron is the tension screw that tensions the rollers. These were heated by sliding hot steel rods into the hollow ends of the rollers (one original rod included). The press has 52 teeth per roller with 1/16" spacing; the press width area is 3¾” long.
The overall condition is fabulous for its age; the fluting roller has a couple of small chips, as shown in the pictures.
This is all original, including the rosewood handle and the green base paint.
Circa: 1850s
Measures: 4½” deep at base, 12” wide, 8¾” tall, 6¾” from the tip of the roller to the end of the handle.
Condition: Runs smoothly; the paint is chipped throughout the base.
Please see all the pictures, as they are part of the description.
