1870 Antique Guhl & Harbeck Original Express Sewing Machine.
Amazing find; this 1870s Original Express Sewing Machine was made by Guhl & Harbeck of Hamburg, Germany. This is an early version dating to 1868-1870; these machines were made through the 1890s.
The machine uses a single sewing thread which produces a chain-stitch pattern. These were designed to be a tabletop hand-crank machine or attached to a treadle with belt drive.
We have seen a few of these machines over the years but never one with the case; it is a very rare treat.
It appears all original except the brass screw that attaches it to the base stand. The case or hood is metal; at one end, a push button releases the latch holding it to the base.
Machine appears to work; untested. It needs a needle.
Circa: 1870
Measures: 13½” wide, 8½” deep, 11” tall with case on. Weighs 16 pounds.
Condition: The machine has scuffs and scratches throughout, with paint loss. The case has dents, dings, and paint loss.
Please see all the pictures, as they are part of the description.
