Antique Champagne Tap / 1870s Edwin Wolverson Signet Style / Trocar Champagne Tap

Sorry, this item has sold.

Thank you for viewing our Store,

We have for sale an Edwin Wolverson Signet Style Trocar Champagne Tap.
This is a very beautiful example Victorian Era British Wolverson style trocar champagne tap with threaded shaft and a removable needle.
The style of this tap is known as an English Holborn Signet Style, for the handle type. The center hole just below the handle was designed by Edwin Wolverson in 1876, you will find this on taps and corkscrews. The word Trocar is the type of tap this is, a two piece tap with removable center spike. The handle is made of Bovine Bone with a horsehair dusting brush at one end, the dusting brush was used for cleaning the dust off the bottle label and cork before opening. This is the original brush and was originally at least another ½” longer but over time it has worn away. The tap is made of Nickle-plated steel and is in wonderful condition.

Operation:
The trocar pin extends beyond the tube with which it forms a continuous spike. The device is inserted into the cork until the end of the shaft/stem is visible. Now the wood handle is screwed out of the shaft and the spike/wire is withdrawn from the trocar. Then the tap is closed with the side valve until the champagne is needed.

History:
Champagne & Soda Taps where designed to pierce the cork of a bottle and not allow the carbonation to escape. Once the tap is screwed through the cork you open the valve to pour your beverage then close the valve to prevent the carbonation from escaping.
